Safety Deposit

Cell line Safety Deposit

Cell line safety deposit is a deposit system that researchers developed to protect and preserve cell line resources (human and animal cell lines, recombinant cell lines, drug resistant cell lines, etc.) from possible danger (cell line contamination or loss).

Cell line safety deposit requirements

Cell line General Deposit is targeted to cell lines that has been or will be published in domestic or international papers. Cell lines that are not published but specially need safety deposit are exceptional.

Cell line safety deposit steps

To use cell line safety deposit 10 or more (maximum of 20) freezing vials are needed for each cell line and a cell line deposit application form must be submitted. The depositor can contact KCLB to choose the number of deposit cell lines for exceptional cases. The Korean Cell Line Bank can culture, proliferate, and freeze cell lines with the depositor’s request. (Fee required)

Cell line safety deposit fee

- First 3 years 150,000 won/case, additional 50,000/case every year, 500,000 won/case for 10 year long-term storage. However, cell lines published in a paper or that has an important characteristic scientifically can be deposited for free after consulting with KCLB.
- Upon expiration of the deposit period, the Korean Cell Line Bank can contact the depositor to ask whether to extend the deposit period, to transform to general deposit or to dispose the cell line.

Distribution of cell lines in safety deposit

- For cell lines in safety deposit, only the depositor or researchers who have obtained approval from the depositor can receive the cell lines.
- KCLB may consult with the depositor to receive additional cell lines or to culture and preserve cell lines with the depositor’s approval if the number of deposited cell lines is not enough.
- KCLB will notify the depositor through paper after the distribution of cell lines.

Conversion of safety deposit cell lines to patent deposit cell lines

- Cell lines in safety deposit can be converted to patent deposit cell lines at KCLRF.
- KCLB will cultivate and multiply the cell lines free of charge and produce frozen vials (15-20vials) and provide them to the depositor upon request.

Conversion of safety deposit cell lines to general deposit cell lines

Safety deposit cell lines can be converted to general deposit cell lines.

Cell lines excluded from safety deposit

- Cell lines that are dangerous to the environment
- Cell lines that need special lab requirements
