December 2018, selected for National Strategic Bioresources

Korea, which relies heavily on foreign resources, has increased the need to strategically discover, manage, and foster domestic life research resources such as finding alternative biological resources, localizing resources, and discovering useful biological resources.

According to the 「Fundamental Plan for the Development of Biotechnology」 and the 「2nd Basic Plan for Life Research Resource Management」, 10 resources were selected as national strategic life researchers based on the evaluation of universality, future, and economy out of 43 resources.

Among the top 10 resources, 'cell lines' were selected as national strategic bioresources under the Ministry of Science and ICT Management Agency.

August 2019, Designated as Exclusive institution for ‘cell lines’ from National Strategic Bioresources

KCLB has been selected as an exclusive institution for ‘cell lines’ with the vision of securing resource sovereignty and strengthening national bio R&D competitiveness by promoting stable securing of cellular resources, enhancing value, and information linkage.

2020, The start of National Strategic Bioresources ‘cell lines’ project

The start of The Ministry of Science and ICT's bio-medical technology development project and the operation of Exclusive institution for ‘cell lines’ supported by National Strategic Bioresources.

2021, Selected for Central Bank of Cell Culture Cluster

Under the 「3rd Basic Plan for Life Research Resource Management」, the government reorganized 274 material banks of five national ministries (Welfare, Agricultural Agency, Maritime Affairs, Ministry of Science and ICT, Ministry of Environment) into 14 clusters to secure strategic and qualitative quality at the national level considering future demand for resources and global issues etc.
‘Cell Culture Cluster,’ which is one of the clusters belonging to the Ministry of Science and ICT has begun in 2021 and ‘The Korean Cell Line Bank’ plays a role as the central bank.
